PM challenges in the construction Industry
Construction projects are known for being over budget, lengthy and timely. And, managing such kind of projects is a tough job because of the poor communication and a lot more challenges. It is essential that a construction project manager take a practical method from the moment of the start of the project with planning the project in terms of cost, duration and management. However, even after planning the project properly there are some obstacles that project manager faces.
Financial Resources
Accessibility to finance and having investment are the two different points that work in construction industries. Any construction industry at some point has to face the competition with other construction business for money and investment. However, there are a lot of investment option can be available, like, banks and other suppliers who seeks opportunities to invest. The company can predict that any project and infrastructure works would be achieved in the particular time period. However, the project managers have very little effect over these kind of factors as it all depends on the investments and the economy of the city or state.
Physical Resources
Material and plant/machinery, the essential part of a construction project. Earlier, it was easy to get the resources as they could be found worldwide in reasonable price. Now, with the competition and rapid development all over the world and prices has increased with decrease of the quantity of the material. So, finding a cheap material according to the budget with good quality has become one of the biggest hassles of project management in the field.
Government Intervention
There two variable that play a major role in this factor, those are government interference and inspiration of constructer’s self-growth. This is one of those industries where govt. plays a major role for the start to completion of the project and many times govt. is the client itself, which make the road of the project completion a bit bumpy, for example, with the change in the govt., a new regulation or any other political reasons directly affect the projects and a lot of time end up pausing the whole project. These are some obstacles which is completely out of control of the project manager.
Labor
The basic unit of a construction project is the labors, either the project is in the urban area or in some remote area finding the labor and communicating with them sometimes becomes a tricky job. Sometimes language becomes the problem when the project is in remote area. If the communications do not go well with the labor it directly affect the project completion. Some more reasons that affect the project in terms of labor are less/no labor or strikes etc.
There are some more challenges a project manager faces, like, natural obstacles that are completely out of a manager’s control and delays the project and affect the cost of total cost of the project. Please feel free to comment if you have more suggestion for the post.
